The cadets on Friday before starting the hike split into two groups. One group learned the history of the Indian Lodge, the second group learned about the animals that lived at the park. The cadets then started on a 7-mile hike for the day, the whole hike for the day took about 5 hours On Saturday the cadets went to the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute for the next 3 miles of the hike. The cadets hiked through a canyon that you had to walk on the edge of the mountain at one point. Then after getting back the cadets walked around the Botanical Gardens at the Institute. Then the cadets went back to Fort Davis National Historic Site and walked to the Fort Davis Drugstore and ate lunch. The cadets walked back to the site which in total was a mile or so. The cadets then went to learn the history of the Fort, and walked around the site to look at the buildings. The cadets then went back up the mountains behind the Fort to hike 2 and half more miles to finish the 15 or so mile hike, and to earn the Bataan Death March Memorial Ribbon.
CAmp Bowie orienteering trip
THuRsdAY, SEPtember 9th, 2021
On September 9th, 2021 Central High School JROTC cadets went to Camp Bowie in Brownwood, Texas, to orienteer. Special thanks to the Texas Army National Guard for making this possible. The trip allowed cadets to learn how to calculate their pace count and to use a compass to find their next point. Cadets also learned how to use a map and a protractor to plot their points (aka destinations). Even though nobody completed the task of finding every point, cadets had lots of fun and learned a lot that day.
